Getting Started Online

Here are a few of the best resources we've seen to help instructors get online quickly:

Colleges & Universities

  • UCI has resources on Pedagogical Continuity, how to Teach Anywhere​, and dealing with technology in TechPrep
  • Instructional Continuity Resources from CVC-OEI are extensive
  • Stanford created a website to assist instructors in rapidly moving online, we especially like their "Best Practices" tab
  • Here's a living GoogleDoc with resources by Jenae Cohn and Beth Seltzer, also out of Stanford, complete with pedagogical suggestions and technology troubleshooting ideas.
  • If you prefer video, Peggy Semingson from UT Austin has YouTube videos on teaching online during a shutdown
  • Going Online in a Hurry What to Do and Where to Start is a quick overall read
  • Association of College and University Educators have free resources on how to help welcome students to the online environment, managing your online presence, and much more in their online teaching toolkit
  • Some great ideas on inclusive teaching online can be found at the University of Denver's Office of Teaching & Learning site.

  • Gates Foundation Covid-19 Response: K-12 has links to a number of curated resources
  • Common Sense Media and a number of partners launched wideopenschool.org, a website for educators and parents that includes great resources and even a daily agenda of online and offline activities by age
  • UCI's Connected Learning Lab has put together resources on Youth Connections for Wellbeing
  • Teaching math?  Check out Assistments for free, aligned homework resources and data-driven assessment
  • Stanford Online High School has videos to help teachers with the basics of getting online
  • What Teachers in China have Learned can help guide US teachers going online during the Covid-19 outbreak
  • Utah's Education Network has Learn@Home resources
  • Google sheet and this one too list free resources being made available during the Covid-19 outbreak to support teaching and learning 
  • SETDA's free teacher resources will be updated regularly
  • ISTE is gathering resources that can be accessed from their Learning Keeps Going page, we especially like their 10 strategies for online learning

But What About Equity?
​Here are some ways to help ensure that students have as equitable opportunities as possible to engage in remote/online learning:


  • ​Lend out laptops to students who don’t have computers at home
  • Lend out portable wifi devices or help students connect with Internet Service Providers providing free or reduced-price access due to the coronavirus
  • Recognize that not all your students have unlimited high-speed data--Combine synchronous with asynchronous learning so that students have different options for accessing material and participating
  • Work with your district or institution to help ensure that students’ other needs are being taken into account, such as access to meals, shelter, and health care
  • Be gentle and flexible in expectations and grading during emergency transitions​
  • ​Check out our suggestions for improving online courses, as these provide evidence-based approaches to better meet the needs of diverse students in online classes.
